If you want something that is simple that you can try right to break an addiction, then this article may be for you.
In this post, we are going to cover a simple technique that is based on Neuro Linguistic Programming, or also known as NLP. But before that, here is a disclaimer.
Before you do any kind of DIY addiction recovery program, I highly suggest that you first consult with a professional. We are not suggesting that the only way to get cured is via a professional program. However, what we encourage is getting a professional opinion from a specialist. Such kind of information may be very useful when it comes to winning your battles against your addiction.
Now that we have covered that, let’s get back to the topic that we have mentioned before.
First Things First
I think it’s best that you should know why this technique works. It goes something like this…
Your brain thinks in terms of connections. Thinking of this leads to this and leads to another. This is also known as your brain programming. Most of these are on the subconscious level, which is why you don’t take notice it; unless of course, you make an effort to notice it.
When it comes to your addiction, basically what happens is that a trigger is initiated, which then leads you to the next step of the program. In most cases, the next step is to use.
We have to stop this programming by cutting the connection between the trigger and the using. By the way, this is called the Whiteout Technique. So, here are the steps:
Be mindful and observe the kinds of triggers to your using. For example, if the sight of a cigarette makes you want to smoke, then that is your trigger. You could have a lot of triggers, thus it’s best that you as write them down as much as you can.
For each trigger, you need to start visualizing.
In this example. the picture of a cigarette. As you picture the cigarette, slowly increase the brightness of the picture in your head. Keep brightening the picture until it is completely white. After you have done that, proceed to the next step.
Now that the picture in your head is completely white, place an object that is completely unrelated (like a laptop or boat) into the white background. What you are trying to do here is re-program your brain.
When the trigger hits you, instead of using, you will think about the object that is completely unrelated. Thus, it’s important that you don’t vary the kind of object from one session to another.
You have to repeat the steps at least 5 times in a single session. Don’t be surprised if it won’t work the first time. 5 times of repeating may be not enough to break the already-ingrained programming. However, sooner or later, with repetition, the brain will take on the new programming.
